Despite constant advancements, why are we still dragged down by lagging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activo.ca\/activo-services\/service-provider\/business-grade-internet.html\">bandwidth<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>An article in <em>Data Center Knowledge<\/em>, an online thought leader in the data center industry, explores this topic in \u201cWhy You Still Have a Bandwidth Problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some of the key issues<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<h2>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fast-Growing Applications<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activo.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Network-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bandwidth\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>The internet has had a hard time keeping up with the demands placed on it by user-driven applications<\/strong>, especially those littered with multimedia ads. These services require speed, always-on availability, and an uncompromisingly positive experience for the end user. Much of the established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activo.ca\/activo-services\/ip-infrastructure.html\">infrastructure<\/a> is not designed to deal with the intensity of demand, and increased traffic loads only make the problems worse.<\/p>\n<p>Providers face additional challenges delivering consistent, high-quality services to users in remote areas who expect fast speeds and zero downtime. According to the article, <strong><em>\u201ca connection that supports 1.8 Gbps between London and Frankfurt on a low-loss connection is reduced to just 2.2 Mbps to Singapore at only .1 percent loss, typical between regions. <\/em>This is close to a 1,000 times decrease.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Limitations Associated With Content Delivery<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Current routing and transport protocols no longer provide adequate service<\/strong>. Many companies have invested in Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activo.ca\/activo-services\/service-provider\/wide-area-networks.html\">Wide Area Networks (WANs)<\/a> to boost delivery speed and enhance performance, but those solutions can only do so much.<\/p>\n<p>Providers can\u2019t control:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geographical circumstances<\/li>\n<li>Pre-provisioned Points-of-Presence (PoPs)<\/li>\n<li>Limitations from cloud providers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To compensate, providers rely on traditional methods like adding new data centers and employing quicker refreshes for edge caching. Although these approaches have some positive impact on bandwidth speed, <strong>the article emphasizes these quick fixes are <em>\u201ca Band-Aid for a bullet hole.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cloud Networking<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.activo.ca\/activo-services\/cloud-solutions.html\">Cloud computing<\/a> offers elasticity, on-demand capacity, use-based pricing, and more. <strong>Unfortunately the potential has not yet translated into results<\/strong>. Providers are <strong><em>\u201cholding back because they cannot guarantee quality, stability and speed.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taking full advantage of the flexibility cloud computing promises and breaking ties to physical infrastructure will enable providers to respond in real time to fluctuating traffic, adapt to the demands of a diverse range of applications and devices, and better serve their users.<\/p>\n<h2>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reactive Internet<\/h2>\n<p>Traditional infrastructures tend to take a \u201creactive posture.\u201d To adapt to the burst of traffic and demand, <strong>networks need to become proactive<\/strong>.
